[English]I'd heard a lot about Patrick Rothfuss before, and as I was looking for a new audiobook to listen to I decided to go with this one. It's the first part in an epic fantasy series and I loved it.

The world this is set in is quite interesting, apart from the university and some other things that happen it seems very similar to how our world used to be during the middle ages. What makes this so interesting though is what one can learn in the university. While 'normal folk' tends to refer to university students and masters as 'wizards' they are actually more like scientists, atlhough, a lot of what is beeing studyied seems like magic to us. 

There are two main plot lines, one set in the present, where our protagonist is an in-keeper and is telling his life story to a scribe. This whole plotline takes place within a day and has only very little 'screentime'. The most part of the book is taken up by our protagonists past. As our hero is telling his story himself it is a very diffrent expirience from most books I've read. He is a somewhat unreliable narator, but the detail he gives is plentiful and keeps the reader engaged. We learn a lot about this world, not all of it relevant to the plot and since we don't know Kvothe's reasons for telling his story we can't be sure he's always telling things exactly the way they happened. He might have embellished somethings or not told us about other things.

As for the plot, I honestly have no idea where this is going and I don't care. We basically follow the protagonist through his early live up until he's around 15 or 16 years old. While it is obvious that something big has to happen at some point to lead Kvothe to the Inn he owns now and to fake his own death, so far we're simply following a young boy through his life. But as I said, I don't care, I loved the story and never wanted to stop listening.

Both the pacing as well as Rothfuss' writing style were perfect for the story and keept me engaged right from the beginning to the very end.

When it comes to character developement we witness Kvothe slowly groing from a child into a teenager, all the while also beeing confronted with him as grown man. This is done in a very believable way and makes me even more excited to continue and see how he came to be who he is now.

All in all I loved this book and rated it 5 stars. I'm already listening to the second book and this series is simply fantastic!

[Deutsch] Ich hatte schon viel über Patrick Rothfuss gehört und als ich mich nach einem neuen Hörbuch umgeschaut habe musste es dieses hier werden. Es ist der erste Teil eines fantastischen Fantasy Abenteuers.

Die Welt in der das Buch ist sehr interessant und, abgesehen von der Universität und ein paar anderen Dingen die passieren, dem Mittelalter das wir kennen sehr ähnlich. Das Interessante jedoch ist, was man an der Universität lernen kann. Nicht-Universitätler nennen es Zauberei, aber aus der Sicht der Schüler und Lehrer wird es eher wie Wissenschaft dargestellt, wenn auch eine Wissenschaft die auch für mich nach Magie aussieht.

In dem Buch gibt es zwei Handlungsstrenge, die Rahmenhandlung in der der Protagonist seine Lebensgeschichte erzählt und die Haupthandlung, eben diese Lebensgeschichte. Da unsere Held seine Geschichte selbst erzählt ist es ziemlich anders als das, was ich sonst so lese. Kvothes' Erzählung ist zum Teil nicht sehr verläslich, aber sehr detailreich und interessant. Seine Erzählung hält den Leser gebannt und man erfährt viel über diese Welt, auch wenn nicht alles wichtig für die Handlung ist. 

Wo die Haupthandlung hinführen soll weiß ich bis jetzt noch nicht so genau, aber um ehrlich zu sein stört mich das überhaupt nicht. Man begleitet Kvothe durch seine Kindheit und Jugend, bis zu dem Punkt als er ungefähr 15 oder 16 Jahre alt war. Es ist zwar offensichtlich, dass noch einige wichtige Dinge passieren müssen bis wir im 'Jetzt' ankommen und Kvothe der ist der seine Geschichte erzählt, trotzdem folgen wir im Moment einfach einem Jungen durch seine Leben, ohne genaues Ziel. Aber wie gesagt, es gefällt mir einfach sehr gut und ich wollte gar nicht aufhören die Geschichte zu hören.

Sowohl das Timing, als auch der Schreibstil sind perfekt für die Geschichte und haben mich gefesselt.

Da wir Kvothe durch seine Kindheit und Jugend begleiten sehen wir auch eine große Charakterentwicklung bei ihm, gleichzeitig lernen wir ihn als erwachsenen Mann kennen. Das macht nur noch mehr Lust darauf die Serie weiter zu lesen um zu sehen wie seine Entwicklung weiter verläuft.

Alles in Allem hat mir das Buch super gefallen und ich habe ihm 5 Sterne gegeben.
